Description
The Bombardier LRC (Light, Rapid, Comfortable) was Canada's homegrown high-speed passenger locomotive, and after 45 years of service VIA Rail is retiring the fleet. Rapido is marking the farewell with the LRC in N scale, finally done correctly. Just 12 feet tall and 63 feet long, the LRC packed a 3,750-hp Alco 251F prime mover with two 250 kW Stamford alternators for HEP. Rated for 125 mph and restricted to 100 mph in service, the LRC hauled the Metropolis between Montreal, Dorval and Toronto throughout the 1990s — the 335-mile run took just three hours and fifty-nine minutes, still the fastest scheduled passenger train in Canadian railway history.
Bombardier built ten LRC-1 cars for Amtrak in 1980, followed by 50 LRC-2 cars for VIA in 1981-82 and 50 LRC-3 cars in 1984-85. Amtrak's LRC-1s were eventually returned to VIA, refurbished and repainted for the International (Toronto-Chicago). VIA's LRCs were pulled by LRC, F40PH-2D and P42DC locomotives; Amtrak's by LRC, F40PH and AEM-7. Rapido's N scale model features sound recorded directly from LRC locomotive 6921, prototypical 1:160 detail and the option of LRC-2 and LRC-3 passenger cars to build complete trains.
Available as a four-car commemorative boxed set (loco + club car + two coaches), as single locomotives and as single cars in matched road numbers. Each loco is offered DC/Silent (DCC ready) or DC/DCC/Sound with ESU LokSound 5 Nano. Pre-orders require a 25% deposit; balance collected when stock arrives.
