Scenery starts with the shape of the land: the grade climbing away from the yard, the ridge that hides the join at the backdrop, the cut the line runs through. Before any ground cover goes down, something has to hold that shape — and it has to be light enough not to sag off the benchwork.
Woodland Scenics is effectively the whole collection. The SubTerrain system covers the structural work with foam sheets in 1/4", 1/2", 1", 2" and 3" thicknesses, including the ST1424 1" sheets in 1' x 2' four-packs, plus ST1408 2" risers and ST1414 3/4" risers. Grades come pre-cut: the ST1411 4% incline/decline set, ST1416 3% incline foam, and matching starters in 2%, 3% and 4%. For contouring over the top, the 1178 Shaper Sheet roll measures 9" by 72", and C1177 assorted modeling sheets come four to a pack. DPM adds the 60131 N scale MBS dock level riser wall section for elevation filling.
Almost all of it is scale-independent, so the same risers and sheets serve an N scale shelf or an HO basement layout. The value of pre-cut inclines is that you set a known grade rather than eyeballing one and finding out later what your locomotives will pull up it.
