Description
Southern Pacific built just one prototype and six production Dome Lounge cars between 1954 and 1955 in its Sacramento General Shops, using salvaged frame pieces from retired Pullman-Standard pre-war Daylight cars and dome kits supplied by Budd. The unusual construction was driven by accounting (the cars were technically rebuilds) and by SP's foundry being unable to roll a long enough center sill in time. The cars went straight into service on the San Joaquin and Shasta Daylights and the Overland, later working the consolidated City of San Francisco and Coast Daylight. Originally fluted, several cars were rebuilt with slab sides by SP in the 1960s, and parts of the fleet later worked on Amtrak through the 1970s.
The interior featured a bar/lounge on the lower level and one of two different upper-level seating arrangements; underbody piping varied based on the donor car. Rapido's HO SP Dome Lounge is designed from original blueprints and field measurements and captures these variations — two fully detailed interior configurations with multi-color decoration (including artwork on the walls), two underbody arrangements, prototypical dome roof lighting, accurate free-rolling trucks, and metal magnetic knuckle couplers.
Track-powered full flicker-free interior lighting is included. MSRP is $159.95 USD / $189.95 CAD. Order deadline was December 15, 2025. Pre-orders require a 25% deposit; balance collected when stock arrives. Suggested minimum radius is 22".
