Description
The Pennsylvania Railroad's F30A flatcar was one of the most prolific flatcar classes ever built — 1,500 cars between 1933 and 1934, with another 250 nearly identical F30D cars built in 1951. Built on a massive one-piece steel casting, the F30 had a structural durability that kept many of them in service for sixty-plus years. In the 1980s Conrail and other roads began mounting prefabricated "vans" onto retired F30 flatcars to house track workers, and these Camp Trains became fixtures on Conrail and continue to operate on Norfolk Southern today. Other F30 chassis were converted to wheel transport flats and continuous welded rail (CWR) cars — workhorses that move through mixed manifests with new wheels, used wheels (complete with bearing details) and giant CWR racks.
Rapido's HO F30A and F30D MOW Flatcar release covers four different van body styles (sleeper, diner, kitchen and office), wheel transport flats with detailed loads, CWR cars with full rail racks, and a return of the tie-flat configuration. Each car features a die-cast chassis and deck for optimum weight, correct PRR 2E-F10 or full roller-bearing trucks, turned metal wheels, full brake rigging, semi-scale metal knuckle couplers, and free-rolling trucks with profiled metal wheelsets. Separate vans are also offered individually in appropriate (unlettered) paint, perfect for yards, engine terminals or construction sites.
Sold as single cars or six-packs depending on configuration. Suggested minimum radius is 18". Pre-orders require a 25% deposit; balance collected when stock arrives.
