Description
VIA Rail's F40PH-2D has been the face of Canadian passenger rail for nearly four decades. Built in London, Ontario between 1986 and 1989, these Canadian-spec F40s included a desktop control stand (hence the "D" designation), a unique fuel tank and underframe, and a custom carbody with Canadian-only panel and door locations. In 2010, VIA contracted CAD Railway Industries in Lachine, Quebec to rebuild the entire 52-locomotive fleet — the HEP alternator was pulled and replaced by a separate HEP generator at the rear of the locomotive, and the units were repainted into VIA's green/grey/yellow Renaissance scheme. The rebuild program was completed by the end of 2012.
Rapido's HO Rebuilt F40PH-2D captures every detail of the rebuilt configuration: the unique post-rebuild body, working headlights, ditch lights, numberboards, radiator fans and grille details with the radiator and cabling visible through the HEP grilles, separately applied factory-installed grab irons and handrails, and incredible underbody detail including separate piping. A working emergency headlight and emergency-shutdown strobe light replicate the prototype's modern safety features. The release includes VIA Rail 6403 in the Canadian $10 bill promotional scheme — and ten lucky buyers of 6403 will receive a crisp uncirculated $10 bill featuring The Canadian on the back. The new "Love the Way" wrap is also included.
Each locomotive is offered DC/Silent (DCC ready) or Dual-Mode DC/DCC/Sound with ESU LokSound 5 Micro. MoPower capacitor and metal knuckle couplers are standard. Suggested minimum radius is 18". Order deadline was February 16, 2026. Pre-orders require a 25% deposit; balance collected when stock arrives.
