Description
Built by Pacific Car & Foundry in 1962, Southern Pacific's 66-B-2 Economy Baggage Cars were a 100-car order intended to replace aging mail and express equipment from the 1920s. 65 cars (6701-6765) were classified as Mail Baggage Express (MBE) with no heating or sanitary facilities; the other 35 (6766-6800) were Train Baggage Messenger (TBM) cars with heating, bathrooms and four extra roof vents — easily spotted by the star above the SP road number. They worked the entire SP system on famous trains like the Lark, Coast Daylight, San Joaquin Daylight, Sunset Limited and Shasta Daylight, as well as the City of San Francisco and Golden State trains — meaning they wandered freely onto the UP, Milwaukee Road, Rock Island and even appeared behind PRR GG1s in the Northeast Corridor.
After Amtrak's formation in 1971, most of the fleet was put into MOW or storage; Amtrak leased some in 1972 and bought a few, painting them in Phase II. Cars 295 and 298 ran on SP's business train starting in 1984, first in silver Sunset and later in Daylight paint, and were eventually sold to the Alaska Railroad in 1997 (where they remain). Rapido's HO Economy Baggage Car features both MBE and TBM variations with appropriate roof and side details, fully detailed underbody, complete interior detail visible through the windows, accurate paint and lettering, and metal magnetic knuckle couplers.
Track-powered flicker-free interior lighting and Rapido's MoPower capacitor for uninterrupted illumination are standard. Pre-orders require a 25% deposit; balance collected when stock arrives.
