Description
After 45 years of reliable service Bombardier's LRC (Light, Rapid, Comfortable) passenger fleet is being retired, and Rapido is marking the farewell with a special commemorative production run in HO scale. The LRC was an extraordinarily powerful locomotive in a small package — 12 feet tall, 63 feet long, with a 3,750-hp Alco 251F prime mover and two 250 kW Stamford alternators for HEP. It was built for 125 mph and restricted to 100 mph in service. The LRC hauled the Metropolis between Montreal, Dorval and Toronto through the 1990s; at three hours fifty-nine minutes for 335 miles, that run remains the fastest scheduled passenger service in Canadian railway history.
Bombardier built ten LRC-1 cars for Amtrak in 1980, followed by 50 LRC-2s for VIA in 1981-82 and 50 LRC-3s in 1984-85. The Amtrak cars eventually returned to VIA for use on the International to Chicago. VIA's LRCs were hauled by LRC, F40PH-2D and P42DC locomotives. This HO release includes updated tooling for the LRC locomotive, new speaker designs, MoPower capacitors, new road numbers across LRC, VIA 1/Business Affaires and coach cars, plus an LRC Farewell collector set with glassware, a commemorative book and other reproduction memorabilia.
Available as a four-car boxed set (loco + club car + 2 coaches), as a Farewell Collector set, and as single locomotives and cars. Each locomotive comes DC/Silent (DCC ready) or Dual-Mode DC/DCC/Sound with ESU LokSound 5 Micro. Pre-orders require a 25% deposit; balance collected when stock arrives.
