Description
GO Transit launched its Lakeshore line on May 23, 1967, kicking off the commuter rail revolution in the Greater Toronto Area. To power its new push-pull commuter trains, GO ordered eight unique GP40TC locomotives from GMD in London, Ontario — a hybrid road switcher with extended-length carbody to house the head-end power equipment for the train. The GP40TC defined GO Transit motive power from 1967 well into the 1990s and, after retirement, several units found second lives on Amtrak as 192-class HEP locomotives. With Metrolinx and GO celebrating their 60th anniversary in 2027, Rapido is finally bringing the iconic GP40TC to HO scale.
The Rapido HO GP40TC is designed from original drawings and measurements. It features Rapido's dead-straight metal handrails with plastic stanchions, incredible underframe detail including traction-motor cables, air filters and HEP cabling, Cannon and Company licensed fan designs, see-through etched steps, separately applied factory-installed metal grab irons and handrails, and operating headlights, rear lights, marker lights, and inspection/walkway lights. An Amtrak Phase III variant is also offered alongside GO's blue, early green and late green schemes — and a special 60th anniversary commemorative box set pairs the locomotive with two coaches and a cab car.
Each locomotive is offered DC/Silent (DCC ready) or Dual-Mode DC/DCC/Sound with ESU LokSound 5 Micro. MoPower capacitor and metal knuckle couplers are standard. Suggested minimum radius is 18". Pre-orders require a 25% deposit; balance collected when stock arrives.
