Description
Since opening in 1972, Bay Area Rapid Transit has moved riders around the San Francisco Bay Area in its iconic fleet of futuristic transit cars. The original A Cars (with the streamlined cab) and B Cars (matched center cars) were designed by industrial design firm Sundberg-Ferar and built by Rohr Industries between 1968 and 1975. The two car types were mechanically identical, but the A Cars' streamlined fiberglass cab limited operational flexibility, so BART added the flat-cabbed C Cars in 1987 (Alstom) and again between 1994 and 1996 (Morrison-Knudsen). The original fleet ran for 50 years almost unchanged in appearance, becoming a sharp visual contrast to the freight railroads paralleling BART's right-of-way.
Rapido's HO BART Legacy Fleet returns with the A, B and C Cars designed from original blueprints, design drawings and field measurements. Cars use Rapido's NEM-style close-coupling system to remain prototypically spaced through all trackwork, and track-powered flicker-free interior lighting works on both DC and DCC layouts. Directional lighting includes headlights and red taillights, with a MoPower capacitor system supporting uninterrupted illumination across switches and dirty track.
Sold as powered and unpowered cars and as multi-car sets. DC/Silent (DCC ready) and DC/DCC/Sound configurations are offered, with the sound version featuring an ESU LokSound 5 Micro decoder. Pre-orders require a 25% deposit; balance collected when stock arrives.
