Description
The GO Transit APCU — Auxiliary Power Control Unit — is one of the most distinctive pieces of Canadian commuter motive power. Built from retired FP7 cab units, the APCU sat at the end of GO's push-pull consists providing HEP and a working cab for the engineer on the return trip, with the prime mover producing nothing more than head-end power for the train. APCUs became fixtures on the Lakeshore line through the 1970s and 1980s, and a sister unit served Miami's Tri-Rail commuter operation as well. With GO Transit celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2027, Rapido is releasing the first ever accurate model of the GO FP7 APCU in HO scale — designed from original EMD/GMD blueprints and field measurements, with era-specific details applied at the factory.
The APCU features Rapido's classic FP7 carbody with etched-metal grilles, early or late nose detailing as appropriate, full cab interior, operational headlight and ditch lights (on appropriate versions), operational numberboards, class lights and DCC-controlled backup light, plus a drive system designed for silky-smooth slow-speed operation. Metal Macdonald-Cartier knuckle couplers and the MoPower capacitor for uninterrupted DCC power complete the package.
Each APCU is offered DC/Silent (DCC ready) or DC/DCC/Sound with ESU LokSound 5 Micro featuring accurate HEP, horn and bell sounds. Suggested minimum radius is 18". Pre-orders require a 25% deposit; balance collected when stock arrives.
