If your layout still runs on the little wall-wart controller that came in the train set box, the RailPower 1300 is the classic first upgrade. Its 300° throttle gives you three times the control arc of a set-supplied pack, so slow orders and yard moves stop being all-or-nothing, and the electronic circuitry is tuned for smooth acceleration and super-slow crawl.
A master on/off switch, indent-action direction switch, automatic circuit protection and screw-terminal AC outputs for switch machines and lights round out a pack that has powered small and medium DC layouts for decades. Enough output for about three average HO locomotives — for bigger railroads, step up to the RailPower 1370.
