Description
The Kadee #206 is the multi-purpose coupler height gauge — the single most important Kadee tool you can own. Sets correct coupler height, checks trip pin clearance, and verifies wheel-to-rail dimensions all in one piece of metal. Insulated body — safe on a powered Kadee track section without shorting.
What it measures
- Coupler head height above the rail (must be 25/64" / 0.395" for NMRA-spec)
- Trip pin height above the rail (must clear the rail by the right amount — too low = drags, too high = won't uncouple)
- Wheel back-to-back gauge (1.583" for NMRA HO)
- Width across the rail heads (track gauge check)
How to use
- Set the gauge on a level section of straight track
- Roll your locomotive or freight car up to it
- The coupler head should sit at the gauge's marked height; the trip pin should clear the marked clearance line
- If anything's off — adjust trip pin with #237 pliers, shim coupler with washers
