Description

The Atlas 50007090 is an N scale Master Line 1932 ARA 40-foot box car in Canadian Pacific paint, road number CP #225027 — the iconic American Railway Association 1932 design that defined freight cars in the late-steam and early-diesel eras.

Prototype

A goal of the American Railway Association (ARA) in the early 1920s was to produce an all-steel box car that could be recognized as a standard by the member railroads. Although the original 1923 design produced over 60,000 cars, it wasn't until the redesigned 1932 ARA standard was presented that the member railroads gave their unified approval. After extensively testing five prototypes in 1933, more than 14,500 cars were built for twenty-three railroads through the following decade. Distinctive features include the fishbelly side sill, riveted side construction, and 6-foot single-door opening — design hallmarks that distinguish 1932-spec cars from earlier USRA cars and later AAR cars.

Canadian Pacific's 1932 ARA cars saw decades of service hauling everything from grain to manufactured goods, with the last examples in revenue service into the 1970s. The CP scheme on #225027 represents the mid-life paint with the script CP lettering.
