Description
The ALCO S-2 was a 1,000 hp four-axle yard switcher with ALCO's 539T turbocharged six-cylinder prime mover, built 1940-50. Great Northern rostered S-2s in terminal switching service at Seattle, St. Paul, and other division points throughout the steam-to-diesel transition era.
This is Atlas's N scale S-2 scaled from actual prototype measurements, finished in GN's classic mineral red switcher livery as road number #2. Features include an option for horizontal or vertical radiator shutters, fine-scale handrails, separately-applied coupler cut levers / air hoses / piping, a heavy die-cast chassis, a five-pole motor with dual flywheels, and directional LED lighting (including cab rear headlight). DCC-ready via NMRA 6-pin (NEM 651) socket.
How to use
- Any N scale Code 55 or Code 80 track.
- DC out of the box; install any 6-pin NEM 651 decoder for DCC conversion.
- Minimum recommended radius: 9.75".

- Pair with Atlas 40005700 (GN #7) for a two-unit Great Northern switcher set, or step up to the factory-sound version Atlas 40005721 (GN #2 with LokSound DCC).
