Description
The Atlas 40005054 is an N scale ALCO FA-1 cab unit in classic Canadian Pacific (CP) tuscan-red and gray fast-freight livery, road number #4015, DC ready-to-run (DCC-ready 6-pin).
Prototype
The ALCO FA-1 was a 1,500 hp B-B 'covered wagon' freight cab unit built 1946–1950 — ALCO's answer to EMD's F-units. CP took 30 FA-1s (road numbers #4015–4044) and 12 matching FB-1 booster units (#4404–4415) starting in 1949, assembled at Montreal Locomotive Works (MLW) under license. The FA-1 was the lead unit of CP's classic A-B-A and A-B-B-A transcontinental fast-freight lashups in the late 1940s and 1950s, in tuscan red ('maroon') with the wide gray window band. The series was largely retired by the mid-1960s due to ALCO 244 prime-mover reliability issues. CP #4015 was the very first FA-1 delivered to CP in 1949.
