Articulated bulk carriers came into their own in the late 20th century, when many New York City-area landfills closed and municipal waste had to move out by rail. The car is essentially a long flat car with a pivot in the middle and a third truck under the joint, so it can work tight curves and narrow industrial spurs where a conventional long flat would overhang — and the extra truck spreads the weight so it can carry more containers.
Atlas's all-new Master Line HO model is Heritage Environmental Services (HESX) #9975 with a black carrier, loaded with six dark blue containers — Heritage Environmental Services HESU 48366, 48374 and 48527 plus Merco Joint Venture MJVU 1280, 1314 and 1989.
