Description
The ACF 5748 4-Bay Covered Hopper is one of the workhorse grain and dry-bulk cars of modern North American railroading — introduced by American Car & Foundry in the 1970s, with its distinctive nine full-width panel body, ten weld seams, and transverse-mounted air reservoir. Atlas's HO Master Series captures the prototype in 1:87 scale, painted as Cargill leased equipment with road number #40029.
Detailed with separately-applied wire grab irons, etched-metal roof walks, factory body-mounted AccuMate® magnetic knuckle couplers, 100-ton roller-bearing trucks, and blackened metal wheels.
How to use
- Runs on any HO scale Code 83 or Code 100 track; minimum recommended radius 18".
- AccuMate couplers swap directly with Kadee #5/#148 if you prefer all-Kadee knuckles on your roster.
- Cargill is a major grain shipper — works perfectly in unit-train grain consists or behind any modern locomotive (e.g. CN/CP/BNSF/UP).
- Collect all three Cargill road numbers (#40029, #40054, #40073) to build a varied unit train.
- Weight is already at NMRA recommended — no extra ballast needed.
