Signals are the detail that makes a layout look operated rather than displayed — a crossbuck and flashers at the concession road, a semaphore board outside the station, a three-colour head that changes as a train goes by. The hard part is rarely the mast; it is the detection and control behind it.
Circuitron covers the control side, including the 8100 Remote Signal Activator, a Tortoise-based remote drive for signals and gates. The Walthers SceneMaster 4359 HO Grade Crossing Signal Controller does the same job for flashing crossings. KATO builds the function into the track itself with the 20-027-1 N Unitrack Crossing Gate & Rerailer section and the 2-601 HO Unitrack automatic three-colour signal track, supported by the 24-845 signal extension cord and 24-848 stop signal switch. Digitrax and WalthersTrack items round out the electrical side.
For static detail, Osborn Models supplies kits — the 1057 HO Semaphore, 1004 HO Crossing Signals, 3004 N Crossing Signals and 3057 N Semaphore Station Order Board. Woodland Scenics C1145 and C1146 grade crossings cover O scale in wood and steel, Atlas BLMA605 modern signal electrical boxes add N scale lineside clutter, and the Atlas 70000051 dual 4-pin harness handles the wiring.
