Description
The KATO 20-015 is a 2-pack of N Unitrack ash pit track sections, each 186 mm (7-5/16′′) long — a specialty piece with a moulded concrete ash pit between the rails, used to model the steam locomotive servicing apron at engine terminals.
Prototype: Steam locomotives dumped accumulated firebox ash and clinker into ash pits at the end of each run, before refilling water, sand, and coal at the servicing track. The pits were typically 6-8 ft deep concrete troughs flanking the rails, periodically dug out by yard hostlers.
Layout uses: Place near a roundhouse or engine terminal as part of a steam-era servicing scene; pair with KATO turntable, coaling tower, and water column for a complete locomotive terminal.
KATO N Unitrack system: Code 80 nickel-silver rail molded into a factory-attached ballasted plastic roadbed, with integrated UniJoiners. Unitrack is KATO's flagship N-scale track system established in the 1960s — the dominant N-scale sectional track worldwide, used in everything from a Bullet-Train table-top to mainline club layouts.
