Description
The Kadee #118 SF Shelf Whisker® coupler is built for tank cars and heavy freight where a standard knuckle could ride up over its mate during sudden stops. The shelf flange catches and re-aligns the opposite knuckle, dramatically reducing override-related derailments. Single Face (SF) — one shelf flange to prevent override during heavy braking.
When to use a shelf coupler
- Tank cars (chemical, fuel, LPG)
- Hopper cars carrying dense loads
- Heavy locomotives at the head of long trains
- Required prototypically on hazmat-classified rolling stock since the 1970s
Compatibility
- Couples with any NMRA-compliant Kadee coupler (#5, #148, #158, etc.) and other magnetic knuckle brands
- Use Kadee #205 / #206 height gauge to set coupler height
