When railfans think of big steam, one locomotive almost always comes to mind. Union Pacific needed an engine that could lift a 3,600-ton train over Sherman Hill without helpers, and ALCO answered in 1941 with the 4-8-8-4 Big Boy: 132 feet long, sixteen 68-inch drivers, and among the longest, heaviest and most powerful steam locomotives ever built. Twenty-five were delivered in two groups (4000–4019 in 1941, 4020–4024 in 1944), each averaging roughly a million miles in service. With No. 4014 back on the main line and touring the country for America's 250th birthday, Broadway Limited brings the Big Boy back to N scale with all-new details never before offered: the commemorative front grab-iron placard, the golden eagle above the headlight, aluminum tires and walkway stripes, a newly tooled dual-beam headlight, new pilot and coupler cover, and the red-white-and-blue UP shield carried on the East Coast Tour.
This version depicts No. 4014 with the distinctive smoke deflectors ("wind wings") it wore on its memorable 2025 excursion between Cheyenne, Wyoming and Denver, Colorado.
The Stealth Series version is a No-Sound / DCC-Ready model with the same drive, lighting and detail — a factory-installed speaker and Next18 decoder interface make it plug-and-play for the aftermarket decoder of your choice.
