Description
The Pennsylvania Railroad's G5 was built for one job — commuter service — and it did it better than any other Ten-Wheeler ever built. Designed by William F. Kiesel Jr. and turned out by Juniata Shops between 1923 and 1929 (90 for the PRR, 31 for the Long Island Rail Road), the G5 combined a modified E6s Atlantic boiler with a 4-6-0 chassis, small drivers and no trailing truck, putting roughly 41,000 lb of tractive effort on the rail for quick acceleration between frequent stops. The G5s worked Northeast and Long Island commuter trains well into the 1950s, and two survive today. This is Broadway Limited's first-ever G5, with two tender variations accurate for pre-war and post-war details and prototypically accurate details for each road number.
This version depicts LIRR #26 in its post-1940 appearance with the larger 70P82a tender, the configuration most G5s carried through the war years and into the 1950s. The Long Island Rail Road's 31 G5s were the backbone of its steam-era commuter fleet, and No. 39 survives today at Riverhead — this model wears LIRR lettering as the class did after 1940.
The Stealth Series version is a No-Sound / DCC-Ready model with the same drive, lighting and detail — a factory-installed speaker and 21-pin decoder interface make it plug-and-play for the aftermarket decoder of your choice.
