Description
Atlas 701 is an HO scale kit for an elevated gate tower — the small raised-cabin structure that gave a crossing watchman or gate keeper a clear sight-line over a busy urban grade crossing. From the 1890s through the 1950s, every major-city street crossing that handled significant pedestrian and trolley traffic had one of these towers and a human operator who lowered the gates by hand as a train approached.
The kit is moulded in colour so heavy painting is optional; the small footprint (~ 2 × 1-1/4", 51 × 32 mm) makes it easy to tuck against the corner of a downtown grade crossing or alongside an interlocking. Pair it with the Atlas #704 Signal Tower for the full interlocking-plant treatment, or use it solo at a single busy crossing.
