Description
The EMD GP40 was a four-axle, 3,000 hp turbocharged road switcher built by EMD from 1965 to 1971 — one of the most common second-generation diesels on North American main lines. Canadian Pacific operated a sizable GP40 fleet beginning in the late 1960s; many were later rebuilt to GP40-2W standards but a number ran as built well into the 1990s. CP's GP40s pulled time freights, transfers, and helper service across the system.
This is Atlas's N scale GP40 finished in CP's red/white/black livery as road number #4600, featuring factory ditch lights, directional LED lighting, walkway safety tread, blackened metal wheels, a scale-speed motor with dual flywheels, dynamic brakes, and factory-equipped AccuMate® knuckle couplers. The model is DCC-ready with an NMRA 6-pin (NEM 651) decoder socket.
How to use
- Runs on any N scale Code 55 or Code 80 track.
- Out of the box, operates on a standard DC power pack (0-12V).
- To convert to DCC, install any 6-pin NEM 651 decoder (Digitrax DN136D, ESU LokPilot Micro, TCS, etc.) — no hard-wiring needed.
- Minimum recommended radius: 11". AccuMate couplers are body-mounted and Micro-Trains compatible.
- Pair with Atlas 40005249 (CP #4611) for a two-unit GP40 consist.
