Description
A #4 turnout has a frog angle of approximately 14° (tan⁻¹ 1/4) — a sharp divergent route ideal for yard ladders, industrial spurs, and tight crossovers where main-line speed isn't required. The #4 is the most popular yard turnout in HO Code 100 because it packs the most track into the smallest footprint.
The Atlas #391 is a Custom-Line Mark V Code 100 #4 Left Hand turnout for HO scale. Features include nickel silver rail on black plastic ties matched to other Atlas Code 100 trackage, a metal frog with a conveniently placed power lug for hassle-free frog powering, and cast-metal turnout points. Can be installed as either remote or manual switching with Atlas switch machines (sold separately).
How to use
- Connect to any HO Code 100 track using Atlas #170 rail joiners.
- Remote: Atlas #65 above-table or #66 under-table switch machine; alternatively Peco PL-10 solenoid or Tortoise slow-motion stall motor.
- Manual: throw by hand from the tie strip, or use a Caboose Industries ground throw.
- For DCC frog powering, wire the power lug to a frog juicer or DPDT switch on the points.
- Recommended yard speed: scale 10 mph through the diverging route.
- Pair with #392 (#4 RH) for ladder yards or staging fans; the wider-angle #393/#394 (#6 LH/RH) are better for through-route main-line crossovers.
