Description
The NMRA #5 is a precision pocket-sized O scale Standards Gauge — a multi-purpose metal tool for checking track and rolling-stock dimensions to NMRA standards.
What it does: Designed and developed by the NMRA Engineering Committee, this gauge lets you check:
- Track gauge (rail-to-rail distance)
- Wheel gauge (back-to-back wheel measurement)
- Flangeway depth and check gauge (turnout point spacing)
- Coupler height
- Maximum clearance (tunnels, bridges, structures)
- Loading-platform height
Why you want one: A wheel that gauges wrong will derail at every turnout. Track laid out of gauge will derail anything that rolls over it. The NMRA gauge is the diagnostic tool that solves both — the single most useful precision tool any serious modeller can own.
- Scale: O
- Material: Machined metal (pocket-sized)
- Standard: NMRA S-3.2 / S-4.2 compliant
- NMRA part: #5
Tip: If a locomotive or car derails repeatedly at the same spot, gauge the wheels first, then gauge the track. One of the two will be out of NMRA spec.
About NMRA: The National Model Railroad Association (USA, founded 1935) is the standards-setting body for North American model railroading. Its Engineering Committee develops the NMRA Standards & Recommended Practices covering everything from track gauge tolerances to DCC protocols. NMRA gauges are precision metal tools machined to the published S-3.2 (Standard) and S-4.2 (Deluxe) wheel and track specifications.
