Description
The KATO 176-8543-DC is an N scale EMD SD70ACU diesel locomotive in CP's Royal Canadian Navy heritage scheme, road number #7022. Navy-blue body with white "Lest We Forget" lettering and CN coat-of-arms detailing.
Prototype: The EMD SD70ACU is a rebuild — CP took former SD90MAC-H high-horsepower units and rebuilt them around the EMD 710G3C-T2 prime mover with AC traction motors, modern electronics, and a clean-cab nose. The result is a 4,300 HP heavy-haul mainline diesel that runs CP's transcontinental drag service from Vancouver to Montreal.
CP Military Heritage series: Five SD70ACU units repainted in 2018-2020 to honour Canadian armed forces — #6644 D-Day (Juno Beach 75th anniversary), #7020 Air Force (RCAF), #7021 Army (desert tan), #7022 Navy (RCN), #7023 (grey heritage scheme). All five make a complete commemorative consist.
KATO drivetrain: Twin brass flywheels, low-friction brass bearings, 5-pole skew-wound coreless motor, and all-wheel pickup — KATO's signature for smooth slow-speed running, near-silent operation, and reliable pulling on any track system (Unitrack, Atlas, PECO).
This is the DC analog version with KATO's standard NMRA 8-pin DCC-ready socket — drop in a Digitrax DN163, NCE N12NK, or any 8-pin N decoder for digital control.
