Description
The Atlas 885 is an HO Code 100 plate-girder bridge — a shorter, deck-style variant in the Atlas bridge family. Riveted-steel girders carry the rail directly on top of the bridge deck (vs. the through-girder #880 with deep side girders).
Prototype: Deck plate-girder bridges are used for short crossings (20-50 ft / 6-15 m) where the underclearance allows the girders to drop below rail level. Common on minor highway crossings and shallow streams across all North American railroads.
Layout uses: Use as a short single-span bridge between Atlas 81 piers (150-81). Pairs naturally with the longer through-girder #880 / #881 for multi-span crossings of varying depth.
