Description
The EMD GP38-2 is a 2,000-horsepower four-axle road switcher built in huge numbers from the early 1970s — one of the most successful and longest-running diesel designs ever. Atlas’s HO model captures the GP38-2 in 1:87 scale in Canadian National noodle-logo livery as road number #5816.
This is the DC version, DCC-ready with an NMRA 8-pin (NEM 652) decoder socket. Drive train: five-pole skew-wound motor with dual flywheels, all-wheel electrical pickup, factory wire grab irons and details, and body-mount magnetic knuckle couplers.
How to use
- Runs out of the box on standard DC; drop in any 8-pin NEM 652 decoder for DCC.
- HO Code 83 or Code 100 track; minimum recommended radius 18″.
- Couplers Kadee-compatible; pre-installed.
- Compatible with most aftermarket sound decoders sized for HO GP38-2-class engines.
- Pair with Atlas CN freight cars or other roadname GP38-2s for prototypical operations.
