Description
Starting in 1947, General Motors' "Train of Tomorrow" toured the United States and Canada as the most ambitious promotional consist ever assembled — four Pullman-Standard dome cars showcasing what postwar rail travel could be. Over 28 months it traveled 65,000 miles, stopped in 181 cities, and was seen by 5.7 million visitors aboard the train (and twenty million more along the route). After the tour, Union Pacific bought the consist and ran it as trains 457/458 between Portland and Seattle, informally known as the "City of Seattle," until retirement between 1961 and 1965. Three of the four cars were scrapped; the observation "Moon Glow" survives unrestored at the Utah State Railroad Museum.
Rapido's HO Train of Tomorrow includes all four passenger cars — Dome Coach "Star Dust," Dome Sleeper "Dream Cloud," Dome Diner "Sky View" and Dome Lounge/Observation "Moon Glow" — plus the train's unique EMD E7 locomotive with the special add-on panels applied for the tour. Each car is designed from original Pullman blueprints with fully detailed interiors, accurate paint and lettering, full lighting, complete underbody detail, operating diaphragms with end gates, Rapido's renowned stainless-steel finish, separate grab irons, free-rolling 41-BNO-11 trucks with blackened metal wheels and track-powered constant lighting on DC and DCC.
