The carbody carried EMD's signature bulldog nose — first seen on the FT — while retaining the rectangular side windows of the earlier E-units. The E7 was eventually displaced by the E8 and E9 and demoted to local passenger service and even freight; several units worked New Jersey commuter trains past the formation of Conrail.
