Designed by William F. Kiesel Jr. and turned out by Juniata Shops between 1923 and 1929 (90 for the PRR, 31 for the Long Island Rail Road), the G5 combined a modified E6s Atlantic boiler with a 4-6-0 chassis, small drivers and no trailing truck, putting roughly 41,000 lb of tractive effort on the rail for quick acceleration between frequent stops. The G5s worked Northeast and Long Island commuter trains well into the 1950s, and two survive today.
